So, why would you do anything else with your logistics needs? Logistics involves a complex web of requirements, competencies, and regulations. For most people, it is beyond their realm of expertise.

Just like with accounting, or law, or any other specialized field, leaving logistics up to the professionals is the best way to ensure that you competently execute that aspect of your business. Trying to do it yourself is a recipe for a slapdash and amateurish solution.

Logistics isn’t a plug-and-play kind of responsibility. There are a lot of moving parts that change from day-to-day and month-to-month. Some periods of time will see your shipping requirements slow to almost nothing, while others will require an ability to regularly move high volumes of products.

And despite some folks’ tendency towards doing it all themselves, these errors are more likely to happen in-house. That’s because, while 3PL companies do nothing but logistics (and have gotten extremely good at it), in-house logistics solutions are made up of human and machine resources that aren’t specialized to the task.

Further, when an error does occur, 3PL companies have expertise in knowing how to best remedy the situation quickly and efficiently. In-house solutions are less flexible with their limited time available for solving problems and correcting mistakes.

Any e-commerce operation with a significant number of orders will need substantial infrastructure to handle that volume. At least, that was the conventional wisdom for a while. Now, with 3PL, even major players in the e-commerce industry can divest themselves of costly and unwieldy real estate and property they once used for logistics and order fulfillment.

Shipping costs can be wildly variable. This is especially true when, as in seasonal e-commerce businesses, volume shifts substantially from month to month. For example, shipping 40 orders to California can result in a significantly different bill than shipping 400 orders to Hong Kong.
