Fulfillment Cost Calculator: Break Down Your Total Fulfillment Expenses

Still guessing what your 3PL bill will look like next month? Plug in your SKU count, order volume, items per order, and box type below and get an instant breakdown across storage, fulfillment, packaging, and labor. Know your number before you negotiate, not after.
What the Calculator Measures
The tool works from five inputs that drive nearly every fulfillment invoice: product category, number of SKUs, average orders per month, average items per order, and box type. Each one changes the output in a different way, so it helps to know what each field is actually doing behind the scenes.
The Inputs You’ll Enter

Product category captures what kind of goods you’re shipping, whether that’s groceries, electronics, apparel, or general merchandise. It’s a classification field for your own reference, since these categories often carry different real-world handling needs.
The four cost totals below are calculated from your SKU count, order volume, items per order, and box type, not from the category you select.
The number of SKUs drives part of your storage cost, since more unique SKUs mean more pick locations, more labeling, and more inventory to track. Storage cost also scales with your total monthly item volume, which is your average orders per month multiplied by your average items per order. That means storage cost moves whenever your catalog size changes, your shipped volume changes, or both.
Average orders per month and average items per order also drive fulfillment cost and labor cost. Every order carries a base pick fee, and each additional item in that order adds incremental picking and handling time. A shop moving 500 single-item orders a month has a very different labor profile than one moving 500 orders averaging four items each.
Box type drives packaging cost. Standard boxes are the cheapest option, eco-friendly boxes cost more but support sustainability positioning, and custom branded boxes cost the most while doing double duty as an unboxing experience.
The Costs You’ll See
The calculator returns four line items: storage cost, fulfillment cost, packaging cost, and labor cost, plus a total monthly estimate. That breakdown mirrors how most 3PL invoices are actually structured, which makes it easier to spot where your money is going instead of staring at one lump sum.
What’s Included and What Still Varies by Provider
No calculator, ours included, can account for every variable a 3PL bakes into a quote. Treat this estimate as a directional starting point rather than a locked-in price, since real contracts also factor in warehouse location, contract length, and negotiated volume discounts.
For more context on how 3PLs structure their pricing, our guide to 3PL pricing models breaks down flat-rate, per-order, and subscription-style contracts side by side.
A few things typically sit outside a basic cost calculator like this one:
- Receiving and inbound shipping, which is often billed per pallet, carton, or hour depending on how your inventory arrives.
- Returns processing is usually charged per returned unit or order, separate from your outbound fulfillment fee.
- Account or platform fees, which some 3PLs bundle into a flat monthly minimum regardless of order volume.
- Kitting, bundling, or custom prep work, billed as an add-on service rather than part of standard pick and pack.
- Shipping postage itself, which depends on the carrier, package weight, dimensional weight, and destination zone, none of which a general cost calculator can price without real shipment data.
Watch for quotes with an unusually low per-order pick fee that gets offset by a high monthly minimum or steep account fee. It is also worth confirming how a provider prices slow-moving SKUs that sit in storage longer than expected, since that is where budgets tend to drift.
Turn Your Fulfillment Cost Estimate Into a Real Plan
Run your numbers through the calculator above, then use that estimate as your opening question in any 3PL conversation. Ask what is included in the quoted rate, what triggers an extra charge, and how pricing shifts if your order volume doubles. A provider that answers clearly is one worth trusting with your inventory.
