How the Calculator Works
The tool asks for five details about your storage setup. A standard 48″ x 40″ pallet takes up roughly 13.3 square feet of floor space, and that single number is the base from which every other input scales:
- Stacking capability: how many pallets you can safely stack vertically. Enter 1 if your product cannot be stacked at all.
- Pallet length & width: default to the standard 48″ x 40″ U.S. pallet, but swap in custom dimensions for oversized or irregular loads.
- Utilization rate: accounts for the aisles, staging areas, and walkways that never hold inventory.
- Total pallets: the maximum quantity you need to store at any one time.
Once all five fields are filled in, the calculator multiplies pallet footprint by quantity, divides by stack height, and then adjusts for utilization to return your estimated square footage.
If you’re working with oversized freight, it helps to know how high pallets can safely be stacked before you lock in a stack height. The same five fields apply whether you’re storing supplements, apparel, or general inventory fulfillment volume.
Picking the Right Utilization Rate
Utilization rate has the biggest swing on your final number, so it’s worth getting right. Here’s a general guide based on how your inventory moves:

If you’re unsure which rate fits your operation, start at 50% for a balanced estimate, then adjust once you know your actual pallet configuration. This matters most for goods stored on pallets rather than shelving, since utilization directly affects your pallet storage costs down the line.
