What the In-Transit Status Actually Covers
In transit covers everything that happens between the first carrier scan and the final delivery attempt. That’s a wider window than most customers expect and a more complex one than most tracking pages suggest.
This does not mean the package is moving at every moment. It means the carrier has confirmed custody, and the order shipment is progressing through their network.
A package sitting overnight at a sortation hub is still in transit. A package held at a local carrier station waiting for a delivery attempt is still in transit.
The in-transit status covers the entire carrier-side journey, not just the moments when something is visibly happening.
How a Package Actually Moves Through the Carrier Network
Here’s what happens at each stage once the carrier takes custody of the package:
The carrier scans and accepts the shipment. When your fulfillment center hands a package to a carrier, that initial scan triggers the first in-transit status update. This is the moment the transit clock starts.
The package routes through sortation hubs. Most domestic shipments pass through two to four regional sort centers before reaching a last-mile facility. Each scan at a hub generates a new status event, which is why tracking sometimes shows multiple location updates within 24 hours.
Last-mile handoff. The package transfers from a regional hub to a local carrier station a few miles from the destination. This is where a specific delivery window (down to a two-hour slot) appears in the tracking feed for the first time.
Final delivery attempt is logged. The driver scans the package at delivery or records a failed attempt. A failed attempt resets the package to in-transit status until the next delivery window, which is where customer confusion most often spikes, and support contacts follow.
What Every In-Transit Status Is Built On
Four components determine whether your in-transit visibility is reliable or full of gaps.
Carrier scan events: Every status update depends on a physical scan at a carrier facility. Without scan events firing correctly, a shipment has no trackable position and is effectively invisible between your fulfillment center and the customer’s door.
Estimated delivery window: Calculated from the origin scan, service level, and destination zip code. This window shifts when weather delays or volume surges hit carrier networks, which is why a 2-day estimate shipping can quietly become 4 without any visible explanation to the customer.
Last known location: The most recent scan point tells you where a package physically was, not where it is right now. Gaps of 24–48 hours between scans are normal for ground shipments crossing regional hubs, but customers don’t know that, and your tracking page rarely explains it.
Tracking number: The link between your OMS and the carrier’s network. Without a valid tracking number transmitted at the moment of carrier handoff, neither you nor your customer can confirm the package is actually moving.
