How to Retire or Discontinue a SKU in Fulfyld

Retire or Discontinue a SKU In eCommerce fulfillment, retiring or discontinuing a SKU is the process of permanently deactivating a product identifier in a warehouse management system (such as Shipedge) so it no longer routes to fulfillment, after resolving all remaining inventory, open replenishments, and return orders.

Quick answer: To discontinue a SKU in Fulfyld, search for it in the Inventory tab in Shipedge, click the History link, then click Discontinue SKU and confirm.

How to Retire or Discontinue a SKU in Fulfyld: Step-by-Step

These are the steps worth considering:

Step 1: Clear Remaining Inventory

If the SKU still has units in the warehouse, you need to resolve that inventory before proceeding. Your options:

  • Sell through the remaining units. Let the stock deplete naturally through normal order fulfillment. Once the on-hand quantity reaches zero, proceed with the discontinuation.

  • Return the remaining units to yourself. Contact your account manager to arrange a return of the remaining stock to your facility or supplier.

  • Request disposal. If the remaining units have no value, contact your account manager to arrange disposal. Fulfyld will not dispose of inventory without your explicit instruction.

Step 2: Close or Cancel Any Open Replenishments

If there’s a pending replenishment for this SKU, contact your account manager to cancel or resolve it. Do not attempt to discontinue the SKU while a replenishment is open.

Step 3: Resolve Any Open Return Orders

Check whether any return orders in Shipedge include this SKU. If a return is in progress, wait for the return to be received and fully resolved before discontinuing.

Step 4: Address Any SynSet Membership

If the SKU is part of a SynSet, discontinuing it will destroy the SynSet entirely. If you need to maintain substitution logic for the remaining SKUs in that SynSet, contact your account manager to reconfigure the substitution setup for those SKUs before you discontinue this one.

Step 5: Discontinue the SKU in Shipedge

Once all the above conditions are clear, log in to your Fulfyld client portal and navigate to the Inventory tab. In the search box on the Inventory view, type the SKU you want to discontinue and press Search.

Step 6: Update Your Storefront

Discontinuing a SKU in Shipedge does not automatically remove it from your connected sales channels. If the product is still listed as available on Shopify, Walmart Marketplace, or any other platform, update or deactivate those listings on the storefront side.

Step 7: Notify Your Account Manager

Let your account manager know the SKU has been discontinued, especially if there are any downstream implications.

The One-Time Product Option

If you sell products that you don’t intend to restock after they sell out, Shipedge has a one-time product flag that handles discontinuation automatically. When a SKU is set as a one-time product, Shipedge will discontinue it automatically at midnight once the on-hand quantity reaches zero, no open replenishments exist, and no open return orders are associated with it.

To set a SKU as a one-time product, go to Inventory → Edit Attributes in Shipedge and apply the one-time product flag to the relevant SKU.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I permanently delete a SKU from Shipedge?

No. Shipedge does not allow SKUs to be deleted or renamed, only discontinued.

What happens if an order comes in for a discontinued SKU?

API orders that include a discontinued SKU will return as an error in Shipedge rather than routing to fulfillment. The order won’t process, and your customer won’t receive a fulfillment confirmation.

This is why updating or deactivating the storefront listing before or immediately after discontinuing the SKU in Shipedge is critical.

Can I re-enable a discontinued SKU if I bring the product back?

Yes. Discontinued SKUs can be re-enabled in Shipedge. Contact your account manager to reactivate a discontinued SKU.

What should I do with the remaining inventory before discontinuing a SKU?

You have three options: sell through the remaining units via normal fulfillment, arrange a return shipment of the remaining stock back to your facility, or request disposal at the warehouse.

Does discontinuing a SKU affect my storage billing?

Once a SKU has zero on-hand quantity and is discontinued, there’s no remaining inventory occupying a bin, so there’s nothing to bill for storage on that SKU.
